Filma Design is a Lisbon-based architecture and interior design studio focused on human-centred, timeless spaces using natural and sustainable materials. We work closely with our clients from concept to construction, designing residential projects that respond to lifestyle, context, and long-term use. We are based in Lisbon, Portugal, and work on residential architecture and interior projects throughout Portugal. Born in 2021 from a desire shared between two friends to work together and rethink the way we practice architecture. Architecture should support people, and help create homes that are clear, functional, and emotionally grounding. Our goal is to make good design accessible, intentional, and deeply connected to how people truly live. We want architecture to feel more human, more intentional, and more connected to people’s real lives. We want to become the clients thinking partner, helping them bring their ideas into the physical world, every detail is intentional, personal, and crafted to enhance the experience of the space. We believe that good design has to improve the way people feel, move, and connect within their spaces.
values
We design for real life, starting every project by understanding how people live, move, and feel within a space. Architecture, for us, must genuinely support daily life and well-being. We believe good architecture brings clarity rather than complexity, favouring clear ideas, legible spaces, and structured processes. We protect the integrity of each project from start to finish, avoiding trends or shortcuts that compromise long-term quality and coherence. Our work is rooted in natural and sustainable materials chosen for their meaning, durability, and connection to place. Architecture is inherently collaborative, and we work best with clients, consultants, and builders who value dialogue, trust expertise, and engage openly in the process. These values guide every decision we make and shape how we work, who we collaborate with, and the projects we choose to take on.
vision
To create architecture that elevates everyday life, spaces that feel timeless, coherent, and deeply connected to their context. We envisions a future where design is a thoughtful process that supports well-being, clarity, and a more intentional way of living. Our goal is to help people experience the transformative impact of design in the spaces we live in and empower them to make small shifts in their homes and routines that genuinely improve how they live.
mission
Our mission is to guide clients through the design journey and become their thinking partner. We aim to translate ideas, needs, and aspirations into spaces with purpose — using natural materials, clear forms, and sustainable thinking.
Through collaboration, technical expertise, and a structured process, we transform complexity into clarity and build environments that feel good to live in.

Today, filma is led by Mafalda, founder and creative director. She works closely with a trusted network of collaborators, with Keesje Avis acting as a partner on most projects. This flexible structure allows the studio to remain intimate and hands-on, while assembling the right expertise for each project.
What architectural services do we offer?
We provide comprehensive architectural and interior design services for residential and commercial projects, from early vision and concept development through detailed design and execution. Our work includes spatial planning, concept design, architectural documentation, material specification, interior layouts, bespoke furniture design, and coordination with consultants and builders. We focus on creating spaces that are intentional, functional, and deeply connected to how people live, work, and experience their environments, whether at home or in a professional setting.
Do we work with sustainable and natural materials?
Yes! Material choice is a fundamental part of our design approach. We prioritise natural, durable, and locally sourced materials with a strong connection to place. By choosing materials for their longevity, performance, and ecological sensitivity, we design spaces that age gracefully and support healthier, more sustainable living and working environments. We particularly enjoy working with solid wood, natural stone, portuguese tiles, hydraulic cement, steel and glass, carefully combining traditional materials with contemporary detailing to create spaces that feel both grounded and timeless.
How do we collaborate with clients?
Our process is collaborative and client-centred. We begin every project by understanding how people live, feel, move, and use a space, whether it is a private home, or commercial space. We guide clients thoughtfully through each design phase, ensuring clarity and confidence at every step. Dialogue, trust, and shared decision-making are central to our work. We act as thinking partners, translating ideas, needs, and aspirations into spaces with purpose, coherence, and long-term value.
Who is best suited to work with us?
We work best with people who value thoughtful design, open collaboration, and long-term quality. Our clients include homeowners, families, business owners and investors who seek architecture that supports daily life, reflects identity, and enhances how spaces are experienced. We are especially suited to those who want to co-create human-centred residential, retail, or commercial spaces that are rooted in context, material integrity, and a clear design intention.
